Principles of Creating Reading Materials (Double Session)

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

This session is a supplement for the teachers in Chinese track to cover the reading materials. It can apply to the languages that lack reading materials in general, particularly for the beginners. The authentic materials for native speaking children are too difficult for foreign language learners. The principles of adapting an existing story or write one are the same. I will demonstrate how to use limited materials to create interesting stories that will have enough visual repetition of the target Chinese characters; stay in bound; parallel to, but not exactly the same as the story that has been circled and retold; an entirely different story or of a different genre (nonfiction) with the same set of structures and vocabulary. We will discuss the purpose of each reading piece and a focus for scaffolding or aim a specific result. The participants will create several short writing pieces in this session and I will also share a free download Chinese language reading website created by TPRS teachers.
